Future Microsoft End of Support Dates April 19 2014

Now that we are both in the midst of Windows 8/8.1 and through the End of Support deadline for Microsoft Windows XP, many people are wondering about Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 support.

The dates that follow are the office end of support dates given to the public by Microsoft:

-- Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)

The much maligned Windows Vista, as of the end of last year, is still used on many more computers than OS X by Apple.

** Mainstream support ends: No longer supported

** Extended support ends: April 11, 2017

-- Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) & Windows Server 2008 R2

This is currently the most popular release of Windows, and promises to hold that top spot for a very long time.

** Mainstream support ends: January 13, 2015

** Extended support ends: January 14, 2020

The End of Support for Microsoft Windows XP April 17 2014

What is end of support?

After 12 years, support for Microsoft Windows XP ended April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1. Customers moving to a modern operating system will benefit from dramatically enhanced security, broad device choice for mobile use, higher productivity, and a lower total cost of ownership through improved capabilities.

What does this mean?

It means that you should take action. After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by adware, malware, etc. and help keep users and their data safer. Computers running Microsoft Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1. – so you can receive regular security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks.
